Hyundai Motor Group’s electric air taxi startup Supernal has paused work on its electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft after recent executive departures, the company said on Sunday.

The decision comes after Supernal’s Chief Executive Officer Jaiwon Shin and Chief Technology Officer David McBride stepped down. Shin, who had led Supernal since its founding in 2021, was a key figure driving Hyundai’s ambitions in the advanced air mobility sector.

“Supernal is currently reassessing its program schedule to ensure we can deliver in the most efficient and responsible way,” the company said in a statement, without commenting on McBride’s exit.

Supernal has also moved its global headquarters from Washington, D.C. to Irvine, California, and cut about 5% of its workforce over the past year.

Despite the pause, the company has continued to advance partnerships. Last year, it announced collaborations with charter jet operator Clay Lacy Aviation and urban air mobility platform Blade Urban Air Mobility to develop the necessary infrastructure and ecosystem for electric air taxis.
