AIR学术沙龙第43期,我们荣幸邀请到新加坡管理大学计算机科学教授Rajesh Krishna Balan,为我们作题为The Challenges and Opportunities in Conducting Applied IoT Research as a Faculty Member的报告。

讲者介绍


Prof. Balan is an ACM Distinguished Scientist and has worked in the area of mobile systems for over two decades. He obtained his Ph.D. in Computer Science in 2006 from Carnegie Mellon University under the guidance of Professor Mahadev Satyanarayanan. Over the years, Prof Balan has established a very strong reputation in the mobile systems research community with numerous publications in MobiSys, SenSys, etc. In addition, he is also very active in SIGMOBILE organised events and has served as the program chair for HotMobile 2012 and MobiSys 2019 as well as serving on the Program Committee for UbiComp, SenSys, and MobiSys. He was a co-general chair for both MobiSys 2016 and UbiComp 2018, both of which were held in Singapore and attracted record attendance levels. In addition, he also serves as the ACM SIGMOBILE Student Outreach Director and has conducted numerous student events, called ASSET, as part of this. He is an Associate Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Pervasive and is in the top 2% lifetime of his field according to the infamous Stanford survey. 

Prof. Balan has had a strong interest in applied research for many years and this is demonstrated by his most recent projects. This includes deploying a trip prediction system in a local taxi companies’ data centre, deploying a campus-wide passive sensing solution to detect signs of excessive stress amongst students as early as possible, working with Olympic athletes to develop new forms of analytics appropriate for them, and being a director for LiveLabs. LiveLabs (http://www.livelabs.smu.edu.sg) is a large multi-million dollar research / startup lab that had a staff strength of 25 (including a project manager, business development managers, postdocs, etc.) and turned real-world environments (such as a university, a convention centre, and a resort island) into living testbeds for mobile systems experiments. Prof. Balan is currently the founder of a startup that is translating his research into viable commercial offerings. These experiences have given Prof Balan a great insight into how hard and meaningful it is to translate research into tangible systems that are tested and deployed in the real world.
